Singapore Airlines First Class 777-200

Flight Review: Singapore Airlines First Class Sydney to Singapore

My flight from Sydney to Singapore in First Class was one of the most memorable flights I have had the pleasure of enjoying. The entire journey was a redemption flight from Sydney to Frankfurt with a short visit to Frankfurt before flying home to London.

I’ve reviewed the two flights individually so you can also read my review of the Singapore Suites flight from Singapore to Frankfurt.

Flight Review:

I arrived at Sydney International Airport with plenty of time to utilise the First Class lounge before my 9am flight. I checked in at the dedicated First Class counter and was presented with my red boarding pass for my First Class flight from Sydney to Singapore, and my gold boarding pass for my Suites Class flight from Singapore to Frankfurt.

I made my way through immigration and to the First Class lounge, which is a little hidden. You must go to the normal business class lounge, and the receptionist will open a secret entrance for you to go through. It’s a sort of sliding glass wall thing. The receptionist at the lounge also handed me my invitation to The Private Room at Singapore’s Changi airport, one of the world’s most exclusive airline lounges, and showed me into Sydney’s First Class lounge.

You can read my full lounge review of The Private Room at Changi airport here, but I enjoyed a freshly cooked breakfast from the menu at the First Class lounge in Sydney and watched the planes and then made my way to the gate for boarding. I was sat in seat 1A. Of course I chose this purely for the delight of having a boarding pass with 1A on it.

The flight from Sydney to Singapore was on the 777-300ER and as this is a smaller plane they have standard First Class rather than Suites. I was lucky to be in the upgraded First Class cabin which has just four seats in a 1-2-1 configuration. The cabin features wide leather seats and large televisions with a digital control panel for the television.

The staff were exceedingly friendly and could not do enough for me and the other two travellers in the cabin. My small case was placed inside a dust bag for protection and I was invited to change into pyjamas and slippers and my clothes hung up in a closet.

The cabin crew offered a warm towel and a glass of champagne (a choice of Dom Perignon or Krug) and a glass of chilled water before takeoff. we were also each given a Salvatore Ferragamo toiletry bag. In the women’s you’ll find a 30ml Signorina Eau de Parfum by Salvatore Ferragamo as well as a body lotion and lip balm/cream, while in the men’s you’ll find aftershave, lip balm and a 30ml bottle of Acqua Essenziale cologne by Salvatore Ferragamo. The kits are quite empty as the usual razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, cotton buds and women’s products are located in the toilets.

I settled into my leather seat and investigated. There was a power point and a USB point just below the widescreen TV, a magazine pocket filled with various magazines to read, and a very large space underneath the footrest for bags and shoes. The seat was one of the comfiest I have sat in.

It had a plush headrest and was so wide you could easily sit in a variety of positions, and the casing around each seat provided a certain degree of privacy from your cabin-mates. There was also a plush leather cushion, and a leather padded belt cover covering the seatbelt. The seat can be transformed into a lay-flat bed, but as my flight was a day flight I didn’t request this to be done.

Breakfast was served promptly after takeoff, with fresh fruit and a bircher muesli, and delicious rolled and stuffed crepes with lemon curd and a cherry compote. The china used on the flight was really beautiful, plain white with a thick silver patterned edging.

Between meals I indulged in a number of films from Singapore’s varied selection of entertainment (an impressive selection of 1,000 entertainment options, – movies, television programmes, music, games and apps), on a 24-inch HD-enabled personal LCD screen with Bang & Olufsen noise-cancelling headphones and a video touchscreen handset.

For lunch I had ordered a steak through Singapore Airlines Book the Cook service. You can book your dish in advance and you get a much wider variety of choices. The starter for lunch was a seared tuna salad with egg and tomato, followed by my steak main. The steak was quite tough, but still impressive for an airline meal. Dessert was a sumptuous and decadent chocolate pudding.

The flight was a very special experience being in a four configuration cabin with just three other cabin-mates for company. The service and food was exceptional and it really set a precedent for my Singapore to Frankfurt flight in Singapore’s Suites class.
